What Kleofas means

Where Kleofas comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kleofas comes from Greek. It joins two old words, kleos, "glory," and pater, "father." Put together they give the sense recorded here: glory of the father. The Greek form is Kleopas, and it reached Polish through the church calendar.

The best documented bearer stands in the Gospel of Luke. Cleopas is one of two travellers who meet the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:18). His name held its place in the liturgy, and Kleofas later appears in Polish records as a saint's name and then as a given one.

It is not a common choice today. A teacher reading the register in a September class may pause before it. The imieniny fall on 25 September, so the name still has its day.

What the name says is plain. A son is the glory of his father. Kleofas keeps that meaning from kleos and pater, the same roots behind Cleopas on the Emmaus road.
