What Kazimir means

Where Kazimir comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kazimir grows from two old Slavic words. Kaziti meant to destroy or disturb. Mir meant peace. Joined, they spell out the reading behind the name: destroyer of peace, and in Polish, niszczyciel pokoju.

The Russian spelling, Kazimir, traveled with artists. The painter Kazimir Malevich showed his Black Square in 1915 and signed it that way. Poland kept Kazimierz, a name four of its kings wore. From it came the everyday Kazik, and the feminine Kazimiera for a daughter.

The blunt meaning never chased families off. The sense stayed, the worry did not. A boy answering to Kazik on a school register carries nothing warlike in the sound. Trace it back, though, and Kazimir still holds kaziti and mir, destroy and peace.
