The form reached Poland through the Church. Three popes carried the Latin Callixtus, and the first of them, Callixtus I, was a freed slave who died around 222 and is counted among the martyrs. Polish shortened it to Kalikst and set his imieniny on 14 October. His name still marks the Catacombs of San Callisto in Rome.
It has always been rarer here than Katarzyna or Jan. A boy named Kalikst tends to be the only one on the class register. The feminine form Kaliksta carries the same superlative, turned toward a daughter. Both still mean "most beautiful."
