What Jamshid means

Where Jamshid comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Jamshid belongs to one of the oldest stories a name can hold. In the Persian epic Shahnameh, completed by Ferdowsi around the year 1000, Jamshid is a legendary king who teaches his people craft and good order. The name joins two Persian parts. Jam names the ruler, and shid means shining, or a ray of light. Together they give the meaning kept here: shining, radiant king.

The name is old. It moved outward from Persia into the Arabic-speaking world and the wider Persianate courts, carried in verse and chronicle. Hafez and other poets wrote of the Jam-e Jam, the cup of Jamshid, a vessel said to show the whole world to anyone who looked inside.

A Polish child called Jamshid meets a class register full of shorter names. Few classmates will know the king behind it. The origin is not Arabic in root, though the name reached Polish parents through that world, and it still means shining, radiant king.
