Johan

Johan reaches back to the Hebrew Yohanan, which meant "Yahweh is gracious." Greek and Latin recast it as Johannes, and the northern languages trimmed that long form down to Johan. The Polish rendering keeps the same claim: Bóg jest łaskawy. The meaning held.

In Scandinavia the name settled early and stayed close to daily life. The Swedish playwright Johan August Strindberg carried it into modern theatre, and Norwegian and Danish parish books are thick with Johans across four centuries. The Hebrew sense inside the name never shifted, even as its sound softened in Nordic mouths.

On a Polish class register Johan looks slightly foreign beside Jan, its homegrown cousin, though both trace to the same Yohanan. A boy who signs Johan on a form at the urząd writes, without translating it, that God is gracious.
