Jesus

The name Jesús reaches Spanish from Hebrew. Its older forms, Yeshua and the fuller Yehoshua, mean "Yahweh saves," and that idea of salvation is the entire content of the name.

In Spain and across much of Latin America, Jesús is an ordinary given name for boys, common enough to appear on tax forms, class registers, and football team sheets. Spanish speakers say it roughly as hey-SOOS. The written form stays close to the Latin of the liturgy, while the sound belongs fully to daily Spanish life.

In the Roman calendar, the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus falls on the third of January, which gives bearers a fixed day to mark. Polish naming custom has no such tradition for this name, and it stays rare on birth records here. What travels intact, from Hebrew through Spanish, is the plain meaning: Yahweh saves.
