Janette

Janette reached Polish ears through Latin. The chain runs back to Iohannes, the Latin form the Church carried across Europe, which itself renders a Hebrew phrase meaning "god is gracious." Every later variant keeps that sentence folded inside it, and Janette is one of the English shapes the old name took after passing through French Jeanne.

The English colouring matters here. Janette belongs to the family of Jane and Janet, feminine forms that grew in Britain while the Latin root stayed fixed underneath. A girl named Janette carries a small theological claim she did not write. The meaning is a statement, not a wish.

On a Polish class register, Janette sits a little apart from Joanna, its native cousin. Same Latin source, different route. One arrived through the Church calendar, the other through English. That difference is the whole story of the name.

So the meaning survives every spelling. "God is gracious" holds in Iohannes, in Jeanne, in Janet, and in Janette.
