What Izajasz means

Where Izajasz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Izajasz is the Polish form of the Hebrew name Yeshayahu, the prophet at the head of the Book of Isaiah. The name breaks into two parts: yesha, salvation, and Yah, a short form of the divine name. Together they mean yahweh is salvation. The prophet preached in Jerusalem in the eighth century BCE, and his book runs to sixty-six chapters.

For a long time the name stayed close to Scripture. It reached Polish through the Latin Isaias and the Greek Esaias, then settled as Izajasz. It never became common. A boy called Izajasz on a school register stands out among the Kacpers and Jakubs.

The meaning does real work here. Salvation was not decoration attached later. It sits in the root yesha, the same root behind Jozue and Jezus. Izajasz states plainly who saves. Yahweh is salvation.
