Islam

The name Islam comes from Arabic, from the three-letter root s-l-m. The same root gives salām, the word for peace, and muslim, the one who submits. Islam itself names the act at the center of a whole religion: submission to God. So the name and the faith share a single word, and anyone called Islam carries the noun the entire tradition is built around. The meaning is plain.

In Poland the name is rare, and it belongs mostly to Tatar families, whose Muslim communities have lived in the country's east since the fourteenth century. Around villages like Kruszyniany and Bohoniki, where small wooden mosques still stand, the name has a long local history. On a class register in Białystok, Islam can sit among names like Jan and Kacper with no translation offered.

There is no Polish diminutive for it, and no name-day in the church calendar. The name stays close to its origin, which is the meaning it began with: submission to God.
