What Isabela means

Where Isabela comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Isabela comes into being as a Spanish version of Elisabeth, itself from the Hebrew Elisheva, "God is my oath". Latin carried the older form west, and medieval Spanish speakers reshaped it, first into Isabel, then Isabela. The vow survived the change. In English the meaning reads plainly: God is my oath.

Spain gave the name its strongest color. Isabel I of Castile, who ruled in the late fifteenth century, made Isabel a royal name across the peninsula. From there it spread through courts and parish records, and the Latin root traveled with it.

Polish took the name and set it down as Izabela, with Iza and Bela as the everyday short forms. A teacher reading a class register might call one Izabela by her full name and reach three others as Iza. The oath is old. What people hear now is a plain, warm name whose meaning still parses: God is my oath.
