What Iryda means

Where Iryda comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Iryda comes from Greek, from iris, the word for rainbow. In Greek myth, Iris was the goddess who ran the gods' errands along the rainbow that bridged sky and ground. The same root spread into ordinary speech. It named the flower with the many-colored petals and the colored ring around the pupil of the eye. Chemists later took it for iridium, an element named in 1803 for the many colors of its salts.

Polish kept the sense whole when it shaped Iryda. The meaning is rainbow.

A girl called Iryda stands out on a school class register. Teachers pause on the second syllable before they read it right. The name gives her something plain to explain: it means tęcza, rainbow, and it began with a Greek goddess who walked one.
