Imelda

Imelda reached Latin from an older Germanic name, Irmhild, which joins irmin, meaning whole or universal, to hild, meaning battle. Read together, the elements give the short meaning that follows the name still: whole battle. From Latin it settled south, into Italian and Spanish registers, where it kept a firm, three-syllable shape.

The clearest bearer is Blessed Imelda Lambertini, a Dominican girl of Bologna who died around 1333 and became the patron of first communicants. Her cult kept the name alive in Italy for centuries. Through Spanish and Italian families it travelled further, and it turns up on Polish rolls today as a borrowed, slightly formal choice.

Nothing about the meaning is soft. A name built from hild, battle, was a martial name before it was a saint's.
