Ignacja

Ignacja comes from Latin, the feminine form of Ignacy. Behind both stands the Roman name Ignatius. Its oldest form was probably Egnatius, a family name whose first meaning is lost to us. Later speakers heard in it the Latin word ignis, fire, and the sense of "fiery, of fire" fastened itself to the name. That same root gives English ignite and ignition.

Ignacja is rare. It is the grammatical sister of Ignacy, and in Poland the two draw on one lineage of bearers. The short form Iga travels more lightly. A girl entered as Ignacja on an official form at the urząd might answer to Iga everywhere else, and few of her friends would ever learn the longer name behind it.

So the meaning holds steady wherever the name is worn down or written out in full: ognista, płomienna, of fire.
