What Iasmina means

Where Iasmina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Iasmina grows from the Hebrew Yasmin, a name built on the word for jasmine, the small white flower. The Polish word for that flower is jaśmin, and Yasmin is still a common girl's name in Israel.

The flower came first. Yasmin named the jasmine long before it named any girl, so a child called Iasmina wears a plant word. In Hebrew that jasmine is a climbing shrub with a heavy night scent, and the name borrows it whole. Polish gardeners grow jaśmin along fences and walls.

The I at the front marks a spelling from outside Poland. Bring it home and it settles as Jasmina, the close Polish variant. On a school register, Iasmina, Jasmina and Jaśmina could sit in a row, one flower spelled three ways.
