What Izaura means
Where Izaura comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Izaura comes from Latin, from the adjective for a woman of Isauria. Isauria was a rugged region in the interior of Asia Minor, in the Taurus mountains of what is now southern Turkey. The short meaning holds to that ground: from Isauria, `pochodząca z Izaurii`. The Isaurians had a name for being hard to govern, mountain people who kept their own counsel.
In Poland the name has a sharper, closer history. In 1985 TVP1 aired the Brazilian telenovela `Niewolnica Isaura`, the first telenovela shown on Polish television. It became the country's biggest broadcast event of the decade. Girls born in those years were given the name Izaura because of the show, not because of Asia Minor.
So the name arrives in two layers. One is ancient and geographic, a Latin label for origin. The other is a Tuesday evening in the 1980s.
Read a school register from a Polish town today and an Izaura born around 1986 tells you her parents watched. The Latin root still means what it meant. She is the one from Isauria.
