Irmgarda

The Germanic roots of Irmgarda sit in plain view once you split it. The first part, irmin, meant whole or universal; the second, gard, meant an enclosure or a stronghold. Put together they give the short meaning the site records: universal protection. The Polish gloss keeps the older, more physical picture, ogrodzona całość, a whole thing fenced round and kept safe.

This is one of the medieval compound names, and it traveled in serious company. A blessed Irmengard, abbess of Chiemsee and a great-granddaughter of Charlemagne, is commemorated on the fourth of September. That form, Ermengard, and the German Irmgard are the same name wearing different centuries.

The Polish spelling with a final -a settles it into a class register without much fuss. It reads as steady, a little formal, unmistakably old.

Say it slowly. The two halves still do their work: the universal, then the wall around it. A parent filling in an urząd form writes a name whose whole architecture is protection, from the irmin that means everyone to the gard that means the enclosure holding them.
