Hugon

Hugon comes from a single Germanic root, hug, meaning mind or spirit. That root held the sense of thought and understanding, and it survives in the short meaning still given to the name: mind and intellect, umysł and rozum in Polish. The Germanic peoples built many compound names on hug, and Hugon is the fuller Polish shape of what most people now know as Hugo.

Hugo is the variant you meet more often. Hugon keeps the older ending.

In a Polish class register the name stands apart from the Marcins and Piotrs around it. It points to no single saint and no one region, since the name carries no fixed cultural tie. What it holds instead is its meaning, a word for the thinking part of a person.

The medieval sense of hug sat closer to spirit than to cold reasoning. The link to intellect grew firmer later, as the name settled into its Latin and Polish forms. Read plainly, Hugon still says umysł.
