Hryhoriy is the Ukrainian form of a Greek name, Grēgorios, built from the verb grēgorein, to be watchful. The meaning is plain from the start: watchful, vigilant. Early Christians read it as a call to spiritual alertness, and it spread east with the church.
The name found deep soil in Ukraine. Hryhoriy Skovoroda, the wandering philosopher and poet of the eighteenth century, carried it across the land on foot. He wrote fables and songs, and refused a settled post. He remains one of Ukraine's most quoted thinkers. His own epitaph reads: the world tried to catch me but could not.
