Hristo begins in the Greek word Christos, "anointed one." The Greek term translated a Hebrew idea, the person marked with oil and set apart for a task. In Bulgaria and across the South Slavic lands, Christos wore down into Hristo, an everyday first name given to farmers, teachers, and priests.
The name belongs to real history. Hristo Botev, poet and revolutionary, died in 1876 fighting Ottoman rule, and Bulgarian children still learn his verses. A century later Hristo Stoichkov won the 1994 Ballon d'Or and made the name known on football pitches far from Sofia. Two men, one name, both anointed in the old sense of chosen.
In Poland the form is rare. A teacher reading a class register might pause at Hristo before a Bulgarian family explains it. The Polish gloss is namaszczony, the same meaning worn in a different alphabet.
