What Hadrian means

Where Hadrian comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Hadrian comes from the Latin Hadrianus, meaning "from Hadria," a town on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The place gave the man his name before the name gave anything to a person. The short meaning stays close to that ground: from Hadria, a city in Italy.

The most documented bearer is the Roman emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus, who ruled from 117 to 138 and left a stone wall across northern Britain that still carries his name. He travelled the empire, built, and redesigned the Pantheon in Rome. Through later Latin the name softened its opening H, and the form most children answer to became Adrian, the familiar variant.

In a Polish class register Hadrian sits rarer than Adrian, the same root with its first letter trimmed. The meaning has not moved. It still points back to Hadria, a city in Italy.
