Hermina

Hermina grows from Germanic roots, the feminine form of the old warrior name Herman. That masculine name joins two words: heri, meaning army, and man. Read together they give Hermina its plain sense of army woman, rendered in Polish as wielka armia.

Herman traveled far. It settled among Germans, Dutch, and later Poles, and the feminine Hermina followed the same routes. The male form reached the historical record early: Hermannus Contractus, an eleventh-century monk of Reichenau, wrote chronicles, hymns, and treatises on mathematics under that name. Hermina is his sister-word, the same military root turned toward a woman.

On a Polish class register today, Hermina sits rarely among the Zuzannas and Majas, an older name holding its ground. The soldierly meaning has softened over centuries, so that few who bear it think of armies at all. What stays fixed is the structure underneath, the cross-gender pair of Herman and Hermina and their shared sense of army woman.
