Hlafira is the Ukrainian shape of a Greek name. Behind it stands γλαφυρός, glaphyros, an adjective the Greeks used for something polished and refined. The Latin form Glaphyra kept the same sense. When it passed east into the Slavic churches, the opening G softened to H, and Hlafira is what Ukrainian speech made of it.
The meaning stayed close to the root: elegant, refined. A Cappadocian princess named Glaphyra lived in the first century BCE, tied by marriage to the Herodian dynasty. Her name reached the Slavic world through liturgy and saints' calendars.
