What Hati̇ce means

Where Hati̇ce comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Hatice is the Turkish spelling of Khadija, an Arabic name that Turkish took in whole. Its roots lie well outside Slavic ground. The oldest sense recorded for Khadija is a surprising one, a child born too soon, a premature baby. Polish name books keep that reading, przedwcześnie urodzona.

The first famous bearer was Khadija bint Khuwaylid, the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad. From there the name spread with Islam across Anatolia, and Turkish reshaped it into Hatice. Ottoman archives list it again and again. Hatice Sultan, a sister of Suleiman the Magnificent, carried it in the sixteenth century.

Today it stays one of Turkey's most common women's names. On a Polish class register, Hatice usually points to a Turkish family. The name still holds its old sense, przedwcześnie urodzona, a child who arrived early.
