What Hannelore means

Where Hannelore comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Hannelore joins two older German names into one. The first part comes from Hanna, itself from the Hebrew Channah, meaning grace. The second, Lore, is a short form of Eleonore, a name long linked with light. The compound is German through and through, and it gave families a single word for grace and light.

The name belongs mostly to the twentieth century. It rose in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s and became common for girls born then. Its best-known bearer is Hannelore Kohl (1933 to 2001), wife of the German chancellor Helmut Kohl.

A Polish teacher reading a class register might pause on it. The spelling looks German, and it is. Hannelore has no Polish diminutive of its own, so it stays whole on the page.

The sense of grace and light was not present in any single root. Someone assembled it, one half from Hanna, one half from Lore. That is what the name gives to those who wear it: Hanna's grace joined to Lore's light.
