What Gregory means

Where Gregory comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gregory comes from the Greek Gregorios, formed on the verb gregorein, to be awake, to keep watch. From the start it meant watchful, alert. The sense held. Early Christians took to the name, and sixteen popes have borne it, beginning with Gregory the Great in the sixth century.

In English the name found a long home. It gave its label to Gregorian chant, and through Pope Gregory XIII to the Gregorian calendar reformed in 1582. Actors, saints and ordinary schoolboys have answered to it, so the sound reads as familiar rather than lofty.

On a Polish class register you would more likely find Grzegorz, while Gregory keeps its English spelling. Either way, the root still says watchful, alert.
