What Giorgio means

Where Giorgio comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Giorgio is the Italian form of the Greek Georgios. The Greek word georgos joins ge, earth, with ergon, work. The name marked a farmer, a worker of the soil. In Polish, that is rolnik.

Saint George carried the name out of the Greek East and into Italy, where he became San Giorgio, patron of Genoa. From there Giorgio settled into Ligurian and Tuscan registers for good. The painter and biographer Giorgio Vasari signed his Lives of the Artists with it in 1550. Giorgio Armani and the composer Giorgio Moroder wear it now.

On a Polish class register, Giorgio stands apart from the Jerzys around it, its Italian cousin under one Greek root. Jerzy is what Georgios became in Polish. Both trace back to the man who worked the earth: the rolnik.
