What Gordian means

Where Gordian comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gordian traces back to Gordium, the capital of ancient Phrygia, in what is now central Turkey. The Greek form named a person from that city, someone of Gordion. The short meaning stays close to the ground: from Gordium.

The city gave its name to a knot. Legend placed an impossible knot in Gordium, and an oracle promised Asia to whoever loosed it. Alexander the Great cut it with his sword in 333 BC. The phrase Gordian knot survives for any problem solved by a bold stroke.

Rome carried the name into its records. Three emperors ruled as Gordian in the third century, Gordian I, II, and III. A boy called Gordian on a Polish class register meets a rarer set of letters. The name still points back to one Phrygian city.
