What Giulio means
Where Giulio comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Giulio is the Italian form of the Latin name Julius. Julius belonged to the gens Julia, one of the oldest patrician families of Rome. That family traced its line back to Iulus, the son of Aeneas, and through him claimed descent from the god Jupiter. The short meaning grows from that claim: descended from Jupiter, or in Polish potomek jowisza.
The most famous bearer stands close to the source. Gaius Julius Caesar carried the family name that Giulio still holds today. When Rome turned into empire, the name of the Julii passed into the title of its rulers, and later into the month of July.
In Italy the name kept its footing across centuries. Composers and painters answered to it. Giulio Romano, the sixteenth-century architect and pupil of Raphael, left his mark on Mantua.
The divine descent was old family pride, attached to the name long before anyone could prove it. Giulio wears that boast lightly now. A boy named Giulio on a Polish class register carries a Roman word for one thing: descended from Jupiter.
