Gosława

Gosława belongs to the old Slavic pattern of two-part names. The second element, `-sława`, means glory or fame, and it survives on its own as the diminutive Sława. The first part points to gość, a guest. Put together, the name reads as "glory of a guest," the honour owed to someone who arrives at your door.

That reading tells us how early Slavs treated hospitality. A guest was a person to whom fame and respect were due. The cross-gender form Gosław carries the same two roots for a boy.

Names in `-sław` run deep in Polish record, from Bogusław to Mścisław. Gosława sits among them, less common today than its cousins.

On a name-day register or an urząd form, Gosława stands out now. Sława does the everyday work. The full name keeps its old bargain with the visitor at the threshold: chwała gościa, the glory of the one who comes.
