Gergana comes from Slavic soil, a feminine name built on Georgi, the South Slavic form of George. Its meaning reaches back to earth and labour: farmer, one who works the ground. The Greek root behind Georgi joins ge, meaning earth, with ergon, meaning work, and that sense of the earth-worker passed into the Bulgarian name.
In Bulgaria the name belongs to St. George's day, Gergyovden, on 6 May. Girls named Gergana keep their name-day then.
The name also has a literary bearer. Petko Slaveykov's 1873 poem Izvorat na Belonogata tells of a maiden called Gergana at a village spring, faithful and unmoved by a vizier's offer of city riches. That Gergana made the name a byword for steadiness in Bulgarian verse.
