Franco

From Latin *francus*, which named a Frank and, because Franks held free standing in Gaul, came to mean free. In Poland it stays rare and male-only: around 250 men carry it, kept going by a handful of newborns each year.

What Franco means

Where Franco comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Franco begins in Latin. Francus named a Frank, one of the Germanic people who pushed into Gaul, and because Franks held free legal standing there, francus took on a second sense in medieval Latin: free. The English word frank, meaning open and honest, grew from the same root.

Italian kept both threads. The adjective franco still means free in a phrase like porto franco, a free port where goods move without duty. As a given name, Franco reads as plainly Italian. It was borne by the economist Franco Modigliani, who won the Nobel Prize in 1985.

The name has no diminutive or variant to hide behind. Four letters, one clear sense. What it says is what the Latin said: free, a frank.
