Firas

Firas is an Arabic name, and Arabic gives it a double sense. The related noun firasa means the skill of reading a person or a situation at a glance. That is the acumen and keenness the name points to, a sharpness of judgement rather than book learning. In older usage the same word covered reading character from a face, a homemade sort of insight.

There is a second thread. The Polish gloss reads wykwalifikowany jeździec, a skilled horseman, and this sits close to the Arabic faris, meaning knight or rider. A boy called Firas answers to both the sharp eye and the steady seat.

The best known bearer is Abu Firas al-Hamdani, a prince and poet of the tenth century. Captured in war, he wrote verse from a Byzantine prison that Arabic readers still quote. On a Polish class register the name is rare. It has no diminutive and no variant, so Firas stays Firas, five letters and the meaning of a keen mind.
