What Ferdinand means

Where Ferdinand comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Ferdinand grew out of Germanic roots. Two old elements meet in it: a word for daring, nanth, joined to a term that scholars read either as protection or as travel. That double reading shaped both glosses given to the name, the English "brave voyager" or "bold journey" and the Polish "śmiały obrońca" or "odważny podróżnik".

The travel reading found a real carrier. Ferdinand Magellan set sail in 1519, and his expedition became the first to circle the globe. He did not invent the sense of his own name. His life matched one half of it anyway.

The protector reading has its own line of bearers. Ferdinand of Aragon helped bind the Spanish crowns together in the fifteenth century, and kings and emperors kept the name in use for generations after. In the Polish calendar the imieniny fall on 30 May. The name still points two ways, toward the bold journey and toward the one who guards.
