Fakhriddin

Fakhriddin comes from the Arabic phrase Fakhr al-Din. It joins fakhr, meaning pride or glory, with din, meaning faith. The name traveled east. In Uzbek and Tajik it hardened into one word, Fakhriddin, without the older break between the parts, and without diminutives or variants to soften it.

The honorific has a long record. Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, a Persian scholar who died around 1210, carried it as a title and wrote a vast commentary on the Qur'an. In that form the two pieces still stand apart, and the sense reads plainly as pride of the faith. The title marked learning and devotion before it settled onto anyone at birth.

A boy named Fakhriddin in a Polish szkoła might find his name stretched across the register, the teacher pausing before the third syllable. The spelling looks long to a Polish eye, though it breaks cleanly once you know fakhr and din. What it holds is simple: chwała wiary.
