Fi̇li̇z

Filiz comes into Turkish from Greek. The Ancient Greek word φύλλον (phýllon) meant "leaf." It passed through early modern Greek as φυλλίς (fyllís), then into Ottoman Turkish as filiz, a shoot or young tendril. The short meaning stayed close to the plant: sprout, shoot, the first green on a stem.

That is the whole story in one word. A name for what has just begun to grow.

In Turkey it became a woman's name, common through the twentieth century. It keeps no diminutive and no male form. Filiz stands on its own. Four letters, one clear sense.

A Polish reader meets it differently. On a class register in Poland, Filiz reads as foreign and easy at once, four letters that sit near Polish spelling. The urząd form has room for it. And the meaning travels well: nowy pęd, the shoot that pushes up in spring.
