From Latin by way of Italian, Fiorella means "little flower". Only about three dozen women in Poland carry it, and the records show no newborns given it this century: most Poles will never meet one.

What Fiorella means

Where Fiorella comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Fiorella begins in Latin, with flos, floris, the ordinary word for flower. Italian softened flos into fiore, then added the diminutive ending -ella. The result names a small bloom: little flower, mały kwiatek to a Polish ear.

The name has stayed close to its Italian home. Fiorella Mannoia, a Roman singer born in 1954, has carried it across five decades of recordings, and her fame keeps the spelling fixed. There is no separate masculine form in play here, though Italian does use Fiorello elsewhere. Fiorella itself arrives whole, without a Polish variant to blunt its edges.

Picture it on a school register in Kraków. Fiorella sits between a Julia and a Zuzanna, an import spelled exactly as Italian spells it. A teacher reads the roll and the double l gives her a small pause.

The diminutive still does its plain old work. It shrinks the flower and keeps it fond. That is the whole of the name: fiore made little, a bloom named small.
