What Feodora means

Where Feodora comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name comes from Greek. Theos meant god, doron meant gift, and Theodora joined them into "gift of god." Feodora is how that name settled into Russian, where the Greek "th" hardened into an "f." The same shift turned Theodore into Fyodor, the name Dostoevsky carried.

The Russian ear kept the meaning even as the spelling drifted. Feodora stayed a woman's name, formal and old.

One documented bearer is Feodora of Leiningen, born 1807, the half-sister of Queen Victoria. Another is Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen, a princess of the late nineteenth century. The name moved through German and Russian courts without losing its Greek spine.

On a Polish class register today, Feodora would stand out among the Zuzannas and Julias. It reads as borrowed, eastern, ceremonial. The meaning holds under all of it: dar boga, gift of god.
