Erazm

Erazm comes from Greek. It traces to erasmios, meaning beloved or desired, and behind that stands the verb eran, to love. Here the recorded meaning, upragniony and ukochany, sits at the root itself, not fastened on afterward.

The name traveled through the Church. Saint Erasmus of Formia, an early martyr, became a patron of sailors, and his feast fixed a name day for every Erazm who came after. Centuries later the Dutch humanist known as Erasmus of Rotterdam paired his name with the Latin Desiderius, "the desired one," a close match for the Greek sense.

There is a feminine variant, Erazma. It is rare.

Read the name in a Polish class register and it stands out at once. Few boys carry it now, which gives each Erazm a certain sharpness on the page. The meaning underneath stays plain: desired, beloved, the sense the Greeks heard in eran.
