Ewaryst reaches Polish from the Greek Euárestos, a word built from eu, meaning good or well, and a root tied to pleasing. The short meaning follows plainly from that: well pleasing, good. A Polish reader would render it as miły, przyjemny.

The name arrived with the early Church rather than with any Slavic root. Evaristus was a Roman bishop of the late first and early second century, later counted among the popes, and his memory fixed a feast that became the Polish name-day, the twenty-sixth of October. That is how a Greek adjective ended up printed beside a saint's date in a Polish liturgical calendar.

Ewaryst stays rare. It has no standard diminutive and no feminine partner, so a boy given it in a school register usually stands alone on that page, the only one of his kind in the class.
