Erin

Erin comes from Éirinn, the dative form of Éire, the Irish word for the island of Ireland. Celtic in root, the name means simply that place: Ireland, the land itself turned into a word a person can carry. It reached English speakers as a poetic term for the country long before it settled onto birth certificates as a given name.

That poetic use matters. In English verse of the nineteenth century, Erin stood in for Ireland the way a nickname stands in for a friend, and the given name grew out of that habit of address.

A Polish child named Erin will find no ready imieniny in the parish calendar, and a teacher reading the class register may pause on the spelling. The name has no Polish diminutive of its own, no softened -ka or -unia waiting for it. It stays as it is. What it holds is compact and geographic: Erin means Irlandia, the short Polish gloss and the long story agreeing for once. The island is the meaning.
