Dymitr

Dymitr comes from the Greek Demetrios. Inside that older word stands the name of Demeter, the goddess of grain and the harvest. To be named Dymitr is to be counted among her people, a follower of Demeter, and that is the plain meaning the name has held: należący do Demeter.

The link to Demeter is old. It reached the Slavic languages through the Church, above all through Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, a soldier and martyr venerated across the Orthodox and Eastern Christian world. As the name spread east and north, it took local shapes, among them the Latvian variant Dmitrijs.

In Poland a boy named Dymitr keeps his name-day on the calendar and writes those six letters on the forms at the urząd. The sense underneath does not move. He is a follower of Demeter, named for the goddess of the harvest.
