Donat

Donat comes from the Latin Donatus, a name grown from the verb donare, to give. To Roman speakers it meant the given one. Early Christians read the giver as God, and the Polish gloss holds that reading close: darowany przez boga, given by God.

A saint stands behind the calendar entry. Donatus of Arezzo, a fourth-century bishop who died around 362, keeps Donat its main name-day on the seventh of August, with a second date on the twenty-second of October. A boy called Donat can point to a page and find himself there.

The feminine form is Donata, the same root turned toward a daughter.

On a Polish school register the name reads at once. It is short. Four letters, a hard start, and a meaning that sits right under the surface for anyone who knows a little Latin: this one was given.
