What Darejan means

Where Darejan comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Darejan reached Poland from far away. The name is old in the Georgian world. A queen carried it: Darejan Dadiani, born 1738, died 1807, wife of King Heraclius II. It appears earlier still in Shota Rustaveli's poem, where the heroine is called Nestan-Darejan. In Russian records the same woman signs as Daria.

The sense given today, unique, unlike any other, was attached later. Georgian scholars trace the older parts of the name to Persian words for a ruler and for the soul. That reading is a trail, not a proof.

On a Polish class register, Darejan sits apart from the Zuzannas and Julias. That difference is the point. Niepowtarzalna, jedyna w świecie. The meaning matches the fact: rare here, quick to spot on any list.
