Ci̇han

Cihan means world, universe. The word came into Turkish from Persian jahān, which carried that same sense of the whole world. Turkish speakers took it, softened the sound, and kept the meaning intact.

The scale of it is the point. To carry Cihan is to be named for everything there is.

You can hear the same Persian root in the compound name Cihangir, "world-seizer," the title borne by the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who ruled in the early seventeenth century. Cihan stands alone without that grasping second half. It names the world and stops there.

In Turkey the name works for men, and it turns up in surnames and place-names too. A Polish reader meets it differently. On a school register in Poland, "Cihan" sits among the Kacpers and Zuzannas as a marker of a Turkish family or a Turkish grandparent. The spelling with the dotted i and the soft c, pronounced like the English "j," is the giveaway.
