What Corinna means

Where Corinna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Corinna comes from the Greek word korē, meaning maiden or young girl. The oldest bearer we can name is Korinna, a Greek lyric poet from Boeotia who is dated to the fifth or third century BC. She wrote in her local dialect and, by one old story, competed against Pindar. So the name begins with a poet.

Ovid took it next. In his Amores, the beloved he sang to is called Corinna, and that book of Latin love poems carried the Greek name into Europe. German writers and readers later grew fond of it, which is why Corinna today reads as a German name more than a Greek one. The meaning stayed close to the root: maiden.

Picture a school register in a German class, a teacher reading down the list and reaching Corinna. The name sits there plainly, no diminutive attached, no variant softening it.

It has no standard Polish nickname, so in Poland it keeps its full four syllables on the imieniny card. The sense underneath remains the simple one the Greeks gave it: girl.
