What Cheyenne means

Where Cheyenne comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Cheyenne began as the name of a people. In the Dakota language, the word Šahíyena marked the Plains tribe whose speech sounded foreign, and it points toward the sense of "red speakers." French traders wrote it into their maps with the spelling we still use. The capital of Wyoming took the same name.

The name is young. In the United States it climbed the records through the 1990s and reached its highest rank around 1996. Westerns of that decade helped bring Plains names into wider use.

In Polish name books a different sense sometimes attaches to Cheyenne: "chwytanie za pięty," a grasping of the heel, and "zastępowanie," a supplanting. That reading came later, laid over a word that first named a whole people. On a Polish class register the name still reads as an import. Its oldest layer stays the Dakota Šahíyena, the red speakers of the Plains.
