Camila

The name Camila descends from the Latin camilla, the word Romans used for a freeborn girl who assisted a priest during sacred rites. Her task was to carry the vessels and stand ready at the altar. The role demanded trust. That is where the short meaning comes from, a young ceremonial attendant, a child of good birth given holy work.

Virgil supplied the most famous bearer. In the Aeneid, Camilla is a warrior maiden, so swift the poem says she could run across a field of grain without bending the stalks. The name passed from the poem into Latin memory, and from there it settled into Spanish-speaking countries, where Camila stays common today.

The Latin points to duty rather than purity. The sense of nobility grew out of the attendant's rank, since only free children of standing were chosen for the work. So the Polish gloss keeps both sides at once: szlachetnie urodzona, akolitka.
