Courtney

Courtney began as a surname before it became a first name. The English family de Courtenay took their name from Courtenay in France, and one old reading traces the name to Old French "court nez", short nose, from Latin curtus, meaning short. That Latin root is the ground the name stands on.

For centuries Courtney belonged to men, an English aristocratic surname carried into given-name use. The shift toward girls came later, mostly in the twentieth century, and American records show Courtney rising sharply for daughters in the 1980s and 1990s. The word underneath stayed the same. It keeps its English shape.
