Claudia

Claudia comes from Latin, from the old Roman clan name Claudius. Behind that name sits the adjective claudus, which means lame. So the name began as a plain description of the body, kulawy in Polish, a word for someone who walked with difficulty.

The Claudii were one of Rome's great patrician houses, and a girl born into it took Claudia as a matter of course. One such woman appears in the New Testament: the Second Letter to Timothy sends greetings from a Claudia among the Christians of Rome. That single line carried the name into Christian use.

A meaning like lame rarely stays literal for long. Few who write Claudia on a school register today think of a limp. The name kept its Roman shape and shed its first sense.

It remains close to its source. No Polish nickname reworked it, no softer variant crowded it out. Claudia still spells out claudus, lame, the way Rome first meant it.
