What Cihan means

Where Cihan comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Cihan comes to Turkish from Persian, where jahān means "world." The origin sits outside the Turkic word-stock, borrowed along the long road that carried Persian vocabulary into Ottoman speech. The short meaning stays close to that root: world, and by extension the whole universe. A parent filling out a form at the urząd writes four letters that once described everything under the sky.

The word traveled well. Persian jahān fed the compound Cihangir, "world-taker," which is a separate name rather than a form of Cihan, and one Ottoman prince carried it: Şehzade Cihangir, a son of Suleiman the Magnificent, who died young in 1553. Cihan itself stayed simpler. It names the thing, not the conquest of it.

In Turkey it works for a boy or a girl, and it stays short. Three syllables in Polish, two in Turkish. No diminutive trails after it in the given fields, so it arrives whole.

A Polish class register would list it plainly among Kacper and Zofia. The teacher reads "Cihan," and the meaning underneath is world.
